Cosmic Princess Kaguya Obsession

In my brutal, near-empty month of unemployment (you can read more here on the Yuri Kissaten Patreon 🙂 ), I have become obsessed with Cosmic Princess Kaguya.

I wrote a blog post indirectly about it in March, not at all expecting that it would STILL be my main media thing all this time later. Not at all expecting that I’d be writing more blogs.

Since that last post, though, I’ve ended up watching the movie a total of nine times and counting. Eight times in theaters. And as long as they keep giving out presents with the viewing, I’ll keep watching every week…

It’s amazing watching it every week and seeing it still crowded in nearly every show, still hearing people choke up in the sad scenes and feeling that rush of excitement when the end credits roll. Is this what people felt like when Titanic was dominating theaters for months in 1998? Is this what it was like for Your Name in its gigantic theatrical run? As a limited release (110 theaters max), Cosmic Princess Kaguya has made a fraction of the money of those two, but it’s still made over 2 billion yen so far, or more than (almost?) every “non-franchise” anime film not made by Ghibli, Shinkai, or Hosoda. It’s a genuine phenomenon, and I’m a part of the zeitgeist. I haven’t been part of the zeitgiest in a really long time!!!!

Soon, Cosmic Princess Kaguya will end up leaving theaters. I don’t think it will last long beyond Golden Week, and it will absolutely be gone by the end of May. There’s lots of collab events, and the crowdfunding campaign for a VRChat world just wrapped up–the future is looking really bright for the franchise… But the success was so unexpected, so triumphantly expectations-crashing, that the people in charge just don’t have enough ready for fans. Once it leaves theaters,

So, at least to fill the space before new content arrives, I might start writing a lot of blog posts… I said on Bluesky that I really shouldn’t spend a ton of time on blogs when I really need to be writing posts, but blogs like these are basically writing warmups anyway, so… it’s probably fine…? I have something like thirty different topics I’d like to write about if I get the chance, ranging from analysis to headcanons to fan theories to silly little observations.

I need a catchy name for it though. If I had started earlier, it’d be Kaguyapril. If I waited a while, it could be Yachiyoctober. If I post all these Cosmic Princess Kaguya blogs gradually, though, I guess it has to be something a little less tied to a time period… Hmm.

Well, anyway, prepare for an assault of blog posts about this one movie I love. It’ll be a nice complement to the many Yuri Kissaten projects coming this spring and summer!
