Beatrice Baker Bluesky – @beatricebaker.com

I tried out a Mastodon fediverse type life last year, but it didn’t stick until Bluesky came around.

You can follow me on Bluesky – Super easy – @beatricebaker.com!

Now, my joining this platform has nothing to do with certain other social media sites which I had mostly quit long before certain rich individuals purchased them. But it does have to do with why I’ve stuck around.

I complained about the toxic hell loop of algorithm-based social media microblogging before. That’s why I’m so totally in favor of features like RSS to help open up the internet! Bluesky, thanks to its increasingly decentralized nature and a legitimately interesting community, has finally captured enough of me to actually use it on a daily basis.

I love the custom algorithm feeds normal people maintain. You can separate out different interests and follow them at your own pace! There’s starter packs and moderation labeling and so many cool features you couldn’t find in 2010s social media. The community atmosphere is generally very positive, interested, and not obsessed with being jerks and starting fights.

It’s a jarring shift from my experiences on practically every other site as of recently, and so I’m gonna actively use it for a while. I hope it’s really fun.

I’ve made some nice post threads already to check out:

My new quandary: My grandmother loved Raggedy Ann, and included in her giant collection were several Snowdens.Snowden is awesome and influenced me to love living snowman characters way too much as a kid. But… What's his story? Who created him? Why did he disappear? What's his Raggedy connection?

I continually advocate for #publicdomain to be boosted around the world even at great cost. Earlier this year I wrote a blog article about my proposal to literally pay companies to help:beatricebaker.com/2024/04/23/p…tl;dr, create a one-time fund to pay a flat fee to release works of art

Click’em to read more. I might convert that Snowden one into a blog post on here soon, too.

I’ll share all my posts from this site onto my account, and when the feature is available I’ll put a lil post feed embed on this site here. Technically, this very https://beatricebaker.com site is part of the ActivityPub fediverse, but I honestly never actually understood how that worked. The Mastodon side of things was never interesting enough to stick with, because I never found the right community… And I also accidentally made like three accounts on different servers somehow.

I’ve tried to “bridge” the ActivityPub and Bluesky accounts, but who knows if that actually works. I’ll report back later when all that’s sorted out!

I also have been maintaining a steady flow of RSS post sharing via Newsblur. I hope to set up some janky system where I can auto-share

Anyway, follow me on Bluesky, @beatricebaker.com, and follow the Yuri Kissaten account too, @yurikissaten.com!

By the way, I haven’t posted about it whatsoever on this site, but lately I’ve gotten extremely into public domain comics and books. I have been fueled mainly by looking into Little Orphan Annie, the forgotten comic strip that inspired the musical and radio show… And then finding out that it’s not available online anywhere despite being public domain????

I'm doing it… #LittleOrphanAnnie

I started trying to archive some strips all on my own, but it’s taking a very long time. Look forward to some updates on that in the near future.
